Health experts plan to help Scotland remain virtually free of tuberculosis
Scottish Public Health Minister Shona Robison made the announcement on World TB Day, for an action plan to be drawn up by the end of 2009. Which will focus on issues like TB surveillance and screening. Scotland has only about 400 cases of TB a year, or 7.9 cases per 100,000 of population, fewer than elsewhere in the UK, and many European countries, the World Health Organisation targets 10 cases per 100,000.
The plan will bring experts together to ensure the best systems are in place to help sufferers and protect the public. The disease was a major killer in Scotland until the 1950s, spreading quickly through damp and crowded tenements.
